Naja Salto (1945-2016) was a weaver, painter and scenographer educated from Kunsthåndværkerskolen in Copenhagen (now known as KADK – the Royal Academy of fine Arts, School of Design), where she studied textile 1962-66 and later Statens Teaterskole (now known as the Danish National School of Performing Arts) where she studied scenography 1972-76.
Naja Salto had over a long period of years mainly expressed herself in textile art as a tapestry weaver, however, during the later years, she spent most of her time and artistic energy on painting, as will appear from the present exhibition.
Within textile art, she has created a long series of remarkable artworks, among them “The Sea around Denmark”, tapestry in the Danish Design Museum (1986) – “Yggdrasil”, stage curtain for the National Museum’s new auditory (1989) – antependium, choir curtain and bishop’s cape for Our Lady’s Church, the Copenhagen Cathedral (1992-94) – “The light of mercy and moment”, two tapestries for Holmen’s Church (1994) and scenography for a number of Copenhagen theatres.
“Naja is a weaver and painter who reaches out from reality to abstraction”, Peter Michael Hornung wrote in “Politiken” on 8 August 2006 about the exhibition “3 x Salto” with Aksel, Naja and Kasper Salto (i.e. her father and son), and adds: “…. Their works mirror related considerations about the union of geometrical and organic”….”What fascinates Salto in his glazed vases and book design, how the disorder of nature can be strengthened through the order of pattern, is a variation of the problem that occupies his daughter Naja Salto in her weavings, paintings, and gouaches: the liberation of form must have a basis in nature.”
