Dorthe Friis Christensen

In her own words:
For the larger part of my life I have challenged myself creatively in different ways.
It began with my handmade collage cards, where I use objects like feathers, thread,  leather and the like togeher with the paper. The motifs are many, from fairy tales to chickens and flowers.
Later came collage pictures, and ultimately the watercolour, which has been my primary style these last fifteen years. Through all the years I’ve enjoyed proficient inspiration and teaching from, among others, Birgitta Glode, Karen Borch and Anna Tørnqvist from Sweden.
In my work with the watercolour I’m especially inspired by the process itself, and the interplay of the colours. In my land- and waterscapes it is the movement of the water and its meeting with land and rocks that I examine. When my objects are houses or facades I tend to think of them as a kind of portraits that the viewer may elaborate upon.
Among my other favourite objects are people and flowers.

There is always a certain degree of unpredictability in working with waterclour, and sometimes it is best just to let go of control and let the colours flow where they wish.
Over the years I’ve moved from naturalism and the traditional to more abstract and experimental watercolour work.
