Naja Salto (1945-2016) was a weaver, painter and scenographer educated from Kunsthåndværkerskolen in Copenhagen (now known as KADK – the Royal Academy of fine Arts, School of Design), where she studied textile 1962-66 and later Statens Teaterskole (now known as the Danish National School of Performing Arts) where she studied scenography 1972-76.
As a textile artist Naja created a number of memorable works, among them: ‘Havet omkring Danmark’ (the ocean around Denmark), a tapestry (1986) in Kunstindustrimuseet (now Danish Design Museum), ‘Yggdrasil’ (the Tree of Life), a stage curtain (1989) to the new lecture hall in the National Museum, antependium, choral carpet and Bishop’s Cape (1992-94) to ‘Vor Frue Kirke’ (‘Church of our Lady’ – Copenhagen Cathedral), two tapestries (1994) to Holmens kirke (church), as well as a number of scenography to theatres in Copenhagen.
